Tehran (ISNA) - Permanent representative of Iran to UN office at Geneva, Esmaeil Baghaei Hamaneh stressed the importance of the position and role of the Disarmament Conference and said that achieving the goals of the institution requires strong political will.

Speaking on Friday at the virtual meeting of the Disarmament Conference, Esmaeil Baghaei Hamaneh said, "All countries should show a certain level of understanding and flexibility to achieve a comprehensive and balanced program".

He also expressed regret over the inability of the conference to start purposeful negotiations and interaction for nuclear disarmament.

"We need a strong political will to assist the disarmament conference in carrying out its negotiating tasks and resuming its core activities to establish legally binding instruments," Esmaeil Baghaei Hamaneh noted.

"However, we have seen a lack of political will on the part of some delegations who want to turn this great conference into an advisory body," the Iranian diplomat added.
