Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says he is sure oil exports from the country will surge several-fold in the next calendar year beginning March 21 amid expectations that a new administration in the United States would seek to lift sanctions imposed on Tehran's energy trade.

Rouhani said at a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday that a draft budget bill presented to the Iranian parliament for the next calendar year is based on forecasts that Iran's exports of crude would reach an average of 2.3 million barrels per day (bpd).

"In next (Iranian) year we will have the capability to produce and sell 2.3 bpd of oil and we will sell it," said Rouhani.

The comments came amid criticism in the media that the budget drafted for Persian calendar year 1400 reflected a high degree of optimism about the future of oil sales by Iran.

Rouhani's administration still defends a 2015 deal it signed with world powers on Iran's nuclear activities although the agreement suffered a huge setback in 2018 when US president Donald Trump decided to pull out and restore a harsh regime of sanctions against Tehran.

The bans imposed by Trump have caused Iran's oil exports to decline to levels below 1 million bpd from highs of nearly 3 million bpd recorded before 2018.

In his Wednesday remarks, Rouhani reiterated his optimism about a return of the US to Iran nuclear deal and said he was positive oil exports would surge.

"The world should get this message clearly that circumstances (surrounding) Islamic Republic of Iran's production and sale of oil in next (Iranian) year will be different than that of the previous two years," said the Iranian president.
