Secondary circuit of Arak nuclear reactor to be operational today: AEOI chief

Tehran (ISNA) – The site of heat exchangers and the middle pool of the secondary circuit of Arak heavy water nuclear reactor was inaugurated on Monday.
"Today, the secondary circuit of Arak heavy water nuclear reactor will be operational," the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), Ali Akbar Salehi told reporters during the inauguration ceremony.
Referring to the set of actions taken in the circuit, Salehi said, "Out of 52 systems that must be operational, 20 systems are completed".
"A considerable part of the secondary circuit of Arak heavy water nuclear reactor will be operational today. The main control room of the circuit is also completed," he added.
The Arak heavy water nuclear reactor, currently undergoing the process of modernization, consists of two circuits. The first circuit is tasked with removing heat from the heart of the reactor, and the secondary circuit is responsible for transferring the heat from the first circuit to cooling towers and finally to the outside environment.
In order to bring the first circuit on stream, the secondary circuit and all of its associated systems must have first become operational.
