US quitting JCPOA great loss in history of bilateral ties

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, Sept 25, IRNA -- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in a meeting with the elite and US foreign policy experts, said the US withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA ) is a great loss in the history of relations between the two countries.

The Iranian president met with US foreign policy officials and elites in New York on Monday evening, stating that his government when formed in 2013 announced a constructive engagement with the world as its foreign policy and has acted on the same basis so far. 'Of course, this interaction was harder and more complicated towards the countries with a history of distrust with them for the past years.'

'In relation to the United States in the early months of the presidency, despite the wide-ranging issues between the two countries, we decided to meet the two foreign ministers for the first time under the nuclear issue,' the president added.

Rouhani added that Trust in the international arena is always a relative issue, and 'we can never achieve 100% confidence, but we can establish dialogue with the two countries with relative confidence'.

'We acted on the basis that if we could reach a consensus on the nuclear negotiations and act in accordance with the practice of the two sides to implement it, this would be a platform for discussion on other issues,' the President pointed out.

He reiterated that the Supreme Leader in his general speech, said that if the United States fulfilled all its obligations as regards the nuclear issue, it could be a platform for dialogue on other issues between the two countries.

Rouhani continued, 'In 2015, in spite of the widespread difficulties in the negotiations, we were able to reach an agreement that was wonderful for many, and it was questioned in Iran, the United States and other countries that how the two countries that had decades of disagreement, reached to Understanding about this sophisticated issue.

Iranian president said that many people at that time were talking about how trust between Iran and the United States was reached, adding, 'Some believed that you could not trust Iran, and Iran would not be committed to its commitments, and some considered the United States unreliable and believed that the country could not remain committed to Iran.'
