Macron, Putin discuss JCPOA
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Moscow, May 24, IRNA -- Russian President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, met on May 24 in St. Petersburg to discuss the Iran nuclear deal as well as the conflicts in Syria and Ukraine.
It's Macron's first trip to Russia as the president of France and follows a visit by German Chancellor Angela Merkel last week. Macron was also attending the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
The talks took place after US President Donald Trump on May 8 pulled out of the 2015 nuclear pact with Iran.
During the meeting, the two presidents discussed Iran nuclear deal officially known as JCPOA, Syrian developments as well as the situation in Ukraine.
Macron said that Russia and France have potential for cooperation on key issues such as Iran, Syria and Ukraine.
Time is ripe for both countries which boast of special locations and permanent membership in UN Security Council with stable and historic ties to find solutions to major issues such as the JCPOA.
Putin, for his part, underlined the need for promotion of cooperation between Moscow and Paris, especially in economic and trade fields.
Hawkish US President Donald Trump pulled his country out of the JCPOA, which drew fierce criticism from other parties to the deal and global community.
