Tehran (ISNA) - Russia has slammed an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Iran as "harmful and destructive".

Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov said: "Iran's domestic affairs have nothing to do with the United Nations Security Council's role."

He added that the possibility of new US sanctions on Iran were "illegitimate".

The French ambassador to the UN, Francois Delattre, also said that Iranian situation does not constitute per se a threat to international peace and security and Iran's domestic affairs nothing to do with UNSC.

Meanwhile, the deputy Chinese ambassador Liu Jieyi pointed to the UN charter, saying, "The Iranian situation does not pose any threat on international peace or security, nor is it on the agenda of the Security Council. Discussing this domestic situation in Iran by the Council is a practice that is not in line with the Council's responsibility as outlined in the UN charter. Doing so does not help resolve the domestic issue of Iran."
