Rouhani: Iran-Russia cooperation strategic for security and stability in the region/Putin: Russia stresses full sanction lift

President Hassan Rouhani met with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin late on Monday in New York on the side-lines of the annual session of the General Assembly and said that mutual attempts and close coordination between Tehran and Moscow had pivotal role in reaching the JCPOA.

In this meeting, President Rouhani said: "This agreement pave the way for development and deepening of ties between the two countries in all aspects". He also touched upon regional issues and the need to fight terrorism and said: "Currently, world public opinion and many governments have come to the conclusion that if the problems of the Middle East, including terrorism is not resolved, other areas will also gradually face problems".

Dr Rouhani also described Iran-Russia cooperation as being strategic for security and stability in the region and thanked President Putin for expressing his condolences on Mina incident.

On Iran's invitation from Russia to take part in the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Tehran, President Rouhani added: "The Joint Commission of Cooperation of the two countries should prepare the required agreements for expanding ties in this trip".

The two presidents also talked about recent developments in the region including the latest status of Iraq, Syria, and Yemen.

In this meeting, President Putin also condoled on the deadly stampede incident in Mina.

He said: "Interaction between Iran and Russia to fight terrorism and international and regional security is at a high level". He continued: "Iran's right to peaceful use of nuclear energy and complete lift of sanctions is stressed by Russia".
