Iran Showcases New Missile

August 22, 2015

Iran has unveiled a new surface-to-surface missile, which features more advanced sensors and technology than earlier rockets.

The missile was showcased on August 22, marking Defense Industry Day, an annual event that displays Iran's military hardware.

The short-range, solid-fuel ballistic missile named Fateh-313, or Conqueror, can strike targets with pin-point accuracy within a range of 500 kilometers.

A UN Security Council resolution, which endorsed the nuclear deal Iran reached with world powers more than a month ago, calls on Iran not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons.

A UN ban on the supply of ballistic missile technology to Iran will remain in place for eight years and an arms embargo for five years.

However, Iran has said that it will not abide by parts of the nuclear deal that restrict its military capabilities.

"We will buy, sell, and develop any weapons we need and we will not ask for permission or abide by any resolution for that," Iranian President Hassan Rohani said during a speech at the unveiling ceremony, which was broadcast live on state television.
