Seizing merchant ship in Iranian waters in conformity with int'l law

Tehran, APRIL 29, IRNA -- Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Wednesday that seizing of a commercial ship with Marshal Islands' flag in Iranian water on Tuesday was in conformity with the international law.
Marzieh Afkham said that Iranian coastguards seized the ship based on an earlier verdict by a court of justice upon a complaint lodged by a private plaintiff.
She expressed hope that as the practical norm, the ship will be released after resolving the financial debt.
The Foreign Ministry spokeswoman added that that ship was transferred to Martyr Bahonar Port in Bandar Abbas and its entire staff from various nationalities enjoy good health and face no restrictions to access consular services.
IRNA learned that the captain of the ship is form Bulgaria and its second officer is from Russia.
The nationality of the remaining sailors of the ship is respectively, 13 Myanmar citizens, four Romanian citizens, one from Ukraine, one from Britain, two Sri Lankan citizens and one from Poland.
Meanwhile, following the seizure of the Marshal Islands flag-carrier cargo ship, the Iranian Navigation and Ports Organization said in a statement that the vessel belonged to MAERSK shipping line and it was seized by Iranian coastguards on Court of Justice decree on April 28.
According to the Navigation and Ports Organization public relations bureau, the decree was issued upon a complaint lodged by a private company named 'Pars-Talaeeyeh Oil Products Company' against MAERSK Shipping Line.
The case passed its legal proceedings and finally MAERSK was sentenced to pay financial damages.
