Experts Assembly chairman passes away

Tehran, Oct 21, IRNA -- Senior Iranian cleric Ayatollah Mohammadreza Mahdavi Kani passed away in a Tehran hospital on Tuesday.

Ayatollah Kani was the Chairman of the Assembly of Experts since 8 March 2011.

He was hospitalized on June 4 due to heart problems. The 83-year-old cleric had been in a coma since then.

Ayatollah Mahdavi Kani was a close friend and long-standing ally of the Late Founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini.

Iranian ranking officials including the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Khamenei, President Hassan Rouhani and the parliament speaker visited the ayatollah in hospital.

Ayatollah Kani was born in a village close to Tehran in 1931. He studied in a number of religious schools and was the student of distinguished religious scholars.

He started his political activities against the Pahlavi regime from very young age resulting in his repeated detentions and ultimate exile.

He spent years in prison during Pahlavi regime and was released only days before the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979.

In post-revolution years, the ayatollah had many sensitive posts including member of the Guardians Council, interior minister, prime minister, member of Cultural Revolution Headquarters and member of the Expediency Council.

He was also a prolific writer and researcher on topics like Islamic jurisprudence, ethics, economy and its foundations according to Holy Quran.

He established and presided a reputable and prestigious university named Imam Sadeq (AS) which teaches and researches humanities from an Islamic perspective.

Ayatollah Kani also founded the first armed organization to maintain security in the society in the early years of the victory of the Islamic Revolution.
