Iran's president says international law is the main mechanism for building trust in negotiations between the Islamic Republic and six world powers over Tehran's nuclear energy program.

"International regulations and treaties of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) constitute main mechanism for confidence-building over [Iran's] nuclear issue," Hassan Rouhani said in a Thursday meeting with his Swiss counterpart, Didier Burkhalter, on the sidelines of the 69th UN General Assembly meeting in New York.

He added that Iran has agreed to all kinds of international oversight on its peaceful nuclear activities, criticizing the discriminatory approach to use of civilian nuclear energy by world countries as unacceptable.

Reflecting on the ongoing situation in the Middle East, Rouhani warned that countries planning instrumental use of extremist groups will regret their moves sooner or later, noting that global conditions will improve if all leaders come to the conclusion that security and development are collective processes and require collective resolve.

Burkhalter, for his part, emphasized that confidence is built among world countries on the basis of international mechanisms and is cemented through dialogue, praising the efforts made by Iran to win the trust of its negotiating partners in talks over its nuclear program.

He expressed hope that the ongoing nuclear talks between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council -- the United States, China, Russia, France and Britain -- plus Germany would soon result in a final agreement between the two sides.

Iran and the six world powers clinched an interim deal in Geneva, Switzerland, last November. The agreement took effect on January 20 and expired six months later. In July, they agreed to extend the negotiations until November 24 amid differences over a number of key issues.
