The head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) says some Eastern governments have been in league with the West in its acts of sabotage against Iran’s nuclear industry.

“Out of necessity, the Islamic Republic of Iran purchases some [nuclear equipment] spare parts from some developing and growing Eastern countries, but unfortunately they [also] seek to sabotage Iran’s nuclear industry,” Ali Akbar Salehi told reporters on the sidelines of an AEOI-hosted exhibition dubbed Countering Industrial Sabotage in Tehran on Monday.

He expressed surprise over acts of sabotage by some Eastern governments which he said have been “deceived” by the West.

“Unfortunately, various European and Western states and also different renowned industries, which hold prominent positions in the world, joined the Zionist regime (Israel) and the US in the process of sabotaging Iran’s nuclear industry,” Salehi said.

He noted that the AEOI constantly monitors the enemy bids for sabotage, saying, “We are skeptical about all the equipment purchased from abroad and we examine all the mechanical and electronic operations of the [spare] parts.”

The AEOI chief, however, said the West’s sabotage campaign has backfired and rapidly increased Iran’s cyber defense capabilities.

“We hope that a new convention proposed by Iran about prohibition of acts of sabotage in the nuclear industry will be approved at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA),” Salehi said.

Also on Monday, Asghar Zare’an, a deputy head of the AEOI, said that Germany, France and Britain have been participating in the US-led campaign to sabotage Iran’s nuclear facilities.

The AEOI has successfully detected and thwarted several malwares over the past year, including a number of instances at the Uranium Conversion Facility (UCF) of the central city of Isfahan, he added.

According to media reports in July 2011, a malware dubbed Stuxnet had targeted industrial computers around the globe, with Iran being the main target of the attack. The reports said Iran's newly launched Bushehr nuclear power plant was at the center of the cyber attack.

However, Iranian experts detected Stuxnet in time, averting any damage to the country's industrial sites and resources.

Furthermore, in June 2012, the Washington Post reported that US National Security Agency, CIA and Israel's military worked together to create the Flame virus to target Iran's nuclear energy facilities.
