Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

Zarif: WMD will bring no security

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Jakarta, March 7, IRNA -- Visiting Foreign Minister of iran Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Friday weapons of mass destruction would bring no security to the world and have no place in Irans defensive doctrine.

Zarif made the remarks while addressing a meeting here with the Indonesian elites and foreign diplomats residing in Jakarta.

The Cold War era is over now and we have reached a new age of global community where the two former superpowers are no longer the only determining powers of the world, Zarif said.

He noted that the world community has to properly identify key factors and players of the new transitional era that according to Zarif has each an individual and independent role to play in the global scene.

Stressing that security has currently become a globally interconnected issue, Zarif said security of one place of the world should not be provided at the cost of insecurity of another place.

He referred to Irans peaceful nuclear activities as well as the long history of Wests bullying pressures against the country to halt or restrict those activities and said, all those pressures were exerted on Iran to deprive the country from possessing peaceful nuclear energy.

The American officials have made grave miscalculations about the Iranian nation, Zarif said noting that with their huge turnout in the countrys latest presidential elections which brough to power the government of President Hassan rouhani, the Iranians have made it clear again that the policy of using pressures and sanctions is futile.

He further said, Nuclear weapons has no place in Irans defensive doctrine, as we believe those weapons will bring no security.

Iran does not seek nuclear arms. It is willing to reach an agreement with the West and West should win the confidence of the Iranian nation to this end.

As for bilateral Iran-Indonesia relations, Zarif said the two capitals enjoyed great potentials to promote bilateral relationships in various fields.

Referring to Jakartas effective role in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and D8, Zarif said every developing country should believe in its capabilities and take steps towards progress.
