A top advisor to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has underlined Iran's resolve to continue its nuclear talks with the Sextet of world powers, saying the ground is prepared for a final deal.

"The policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran is continuation of talks and adherence to the provisions of the Geneva deal and the ground is prepared to achieve a final agreement [on Iran's nuclear issue]," said Ali Akbar Velayati on the sidelines of a Tuesday ceremony in Tehran.

Velayati slammed the new US sanctions against Iran and argued that those sanctions should not have been imposed, pointing to the fact that some members of the group of six powers, such as Russia, have objected to the move.

On Thursday, the US Departments of Treasury announced new sanctions against a number of companies and individuals over "providing support" for Iran's nuclear energy program.

The new US sanctions came despite the interim nuclear agreement inked between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - Russia, China, France, Britain and the US - plus Germany in the Swiss city of Geneva on November 24.

The interim deal sought to set the stage for the full resolution of the West's decade-old dispute with Iran over the country's nuclear energy program.

"The Americans have no choice but to adhere to their obligations under the Geneva agreement because after their failed experience in Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon and Syria, they definitely do not want their situation in the region with regard to Iran to move in a direction that is not in their interest," Velayati added.
