Iran says the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors could visit the Arak heavy water plant, in central Iran, within weeks.

"The visit to the Arak heavy water plant can take place by December 11 ahead of the new round of expert-level talks between Iran and the agency," said Iran's Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI) spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi on Tuesday.

Under the deal signed between Iran and IAEA, , Tehran will, on a voluntary basis, allow IAEA inspectors to visit the Arak heavy water plant and the Gachin uranium mine in Bandar Abbas in southern Iran. Under the IAEA Safeguards Agreement, Iran is not obliged to allow the inspections.

AEOI spokesman however said that Iran and the IAEA would first have to hammer out the details of the inspections.

"If we reach an agreement with the agency on the details of the inspection, then their visit to the Arak facility could take place before December 11 and under the supervision of the AEOI," he said.

AEOI Chief Ali Akbar Salehi and IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano signed a joint statement in Tehran on Monday on a road map for more cooperation on the outstanding issues.

Upon his arrival at Vienna airport on Tuesday following his visit to Iran, the IAEA chief described the agreement as "a framework for cooperation and it has six practical measures" that will be implemented in three months.

Amano arrived in Tehran earlier on Monday at Salehi's invitation to discuss further cooperation between Iran and the IAEA.
