Iran's ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says the talks between Tehran and the UN nuclear agency on Monday were "serious and progressive."
Reza Najafi said in an interview with ISNA that issues of substance were discussed during the first day of the talks in Vienna.
Iran and the IAEA are set to resume the second day of talks on Tuesday.
Najafi is heading the Iranian delegation, while IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Safeguards Herman Nackaerts leads the IAEA team.
The Iranian official also stated that the "structural approach" adopted in the previous rounds of negotiations has not been appropriate and that is why the talks have lasted for two years.
On Monday, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi presented the Islamic republic's new approach regarding its nuclear energy program in a meeting with IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano.
Araqchi said following the meeting that in the talks it was emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran is keen to improve its cooperation with the UN agency.
Describing Iran's proposed approach as "operational," Najafi said Tehran's offer to the IAEA is not related to its proposal to the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany.
Iran and the group of six major world powers held two days of negotiations over the Islamic Republic's nuclear energy program in Geneva on October 15-16. The two sides will meet again in the Swiss city on November 7-8.
