A senior Iranian military commander says the country plans to increase the range of domestically-designed and manufactured air-launched missiles to 300 kilometers.

Head of the Aerospace Industries Organization of Iran's Defense Ministry Seyyed Mehdi Farahi said on Tuesday that his organization pursues five independent strategies regarding the production of anti-tank, cruise, ballistic and anti-aircraft missiles as well as space rockets and satellite carriers.

He termed the development and production of anti-aircraft missiles as highly challenging and demanding.

“We have divided the sky into seven virtual layers based on air defense [aspects], and have launched different projects in order to get diverse products in these seven skies,” Farahi pointed out.

He further noted that air defense has itself been divided into five sections; shoulder-launched, short-range, medium-range, long-range, extra-long range and air-launched.

“We must manufacture air-launched missiles that have high deterrence, are effective and long-range…,” Farahi said.

He added that Iran’s Aerospace Industries Organization is seeking to boost the precision of missiles and their radar-evading capability, install them on unmanned aerial vehicles, tactically connect them to Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence (C4I) systems, increase missiles durability and make them smart.

In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and has attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.

Tehran has repeatedly assured other nations that its military might poses no threat to other countries since the Islamic Republic’s defense doctrine is based entirely on deterrence.
