IAEO Head: Bushehr Power Plant is safe
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Bushehr, Sept 23, IRNA -- Head of Iran Atomic Energy Organization (IAEO) Ali Akbar Salehi reassured Persian Gulf countries that Bushehr Power Plant is safe.
Salehi made the remarks here on Monday, reasusuring neighboring countries in the Persian Gulf not to be worried about safety of the Bushehr Power Plant and that their experts can visit the place to make sure about its safety.
He continued that with the help of experts from International Atomic Energy Agency and Russia, all safety standards have been met.
Vice-President Salehi also said Iran is negotiating with Russia to build other power plants in Bushehr in near future, adding that the power plants will produce desalinated water.
The initial construction of the Bushehr nuclear power plant began in 1975 by German companies, but the work was halted following the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
In 1995, Iran and Russia reached an agreement to complete the project, but power generation was delayed several times due to a number of technical and financial problems.
The plant became officially operational and was connected to Iran's national grid in September 2011, generating electricity at 40 percent capacity.
Iran and the Russian contractor of the project, Atomstroyexport, have assured the international community that the facility is fully compliant with high level safety standards and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The facility is also operating under the full supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
