Iran President Hassan Rouhani has reaffirmed the Islamic Republic's determination to maintain peace in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran has always wanted the Strait of Hormuz to be the strait of peace, friendship and fraternity," Rouhani said in a meeting with Oman's Minister Responsible for Defense Sayyid Badr bin Saud Al Busaidi in Tehran on Tuesday.
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow shipping channel that leads in and out of the Persian Gulf between Iran and Oman.
The Iranian chief executive pointed to the long-standing friendly relations between Iran and Oman, and called for the expansion of mutual cooperation in all areas, particularly in the defense sector.
Rouhani gave a "positive" assessment of the late August visit to Tehran by Oman's Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said, saying, "With regard to the promotion of cooperation and relations with other states, the Islamic Republic of Iran gives special priority to its neighbors, particularly to the state of Oman."
Sultan Qaboos led a high-ranking delegation to Tehran during his three-day official visit which started on August 25.
The Omani defense minister, for his part, hailed the positive and constructive process of defense cooperation between the two neighboring countries and expressed confidence that Tehran-Muscat ties will grow in all areas.
Leading a high-ranking delegation, Sayyid Badr bin Saud Al Busaidi arrived in Iran on Monday.
