Biography of former Majlis speaker

Tehran, May 21, IRNA -- Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel, born in 1945 in Tehran, is a philosopher and politician.

He is former chairman of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis). He is the first non-cleric in the post since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

He received his Phd in philosophy from the University of Tehran in 1975, and also, holds a BSc and an MSc in Physics from the University of Tehran and University of Shiraz, respectively.

He is currently a member of the Academy of Persian Language and Literature, the High Council of Cultural Revolution, and the Expediency Council.

The Guardian Council on Tuesday qualified eight hopefuls, including Haddad-Adel, to run in the upcoming presidential race slated for June 14. A total of 686 hopefuls registered from May 7-11 for the 11th presidential election.

The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election.
