The secretary of Iran’s top arbitration body, the Expediency Council, Mohsen Rezaei, has officially announced his candidacy for the next presidential election in June.
Rezaei, a former chief of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), declared his presidential bid on Monday in the western city of Divandarreh in the Kordestan Province, pledging to improve the country’s economy.
“Today, I announce that I will participate in the forthcoming presidential election. I announce it in this city in order to explain my approach for resolving the country’s problems, above all unemployment and inflation…,” Rezaei said.
“…In the coming years, we will not only get rid of [international] sanctions [against Iran], but we will also bring prosperity to the Iranian economy and that is quite possible…,” he added.
Iran is facing several rounds of unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union on the false allegation of military diversion in its nuclear energy program.
So far, former intelligence minister, Ali Fallahian, and former foreign minister, Manouchehr Mottaki, have declared their intention to run for president.
The Islamic Republic’s eleventh presidential election will be held on June 14. Presidential hopefuls will register from May 7 to May 11.
The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term and candidates for the presidency must be vetted for qualifications by the Guardian Council.
