Terrorist attack kills 2 people, injures 5 others in SE Iran

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, Oct 19, IRNA -- A suicide bomber escaping from the security forces detonated his explosives near a mosque in southeastern Iran on Friday, killing two people and injuring five others.

The report said there are three children and one police among the injured.

The suspect tried to enter the Imam Hossein mosque in Chabahar port as people gathered for Friday congregation, but was stopped by the security guards. The bomber set off his explosive belt a few hundred meters (yards) outside the mosque, killing two security personals and wounding several others.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Speaking to reporters, a representative from Chabahar in the Iranian parliament, Yaqoub Jedgal blamed the explosion on 'remnants of terrorist groups'.

Chabahar is in Sistan-Baluchistan province, near the border with Pakistan.

In a similar attack by two suicide bombers targetting a religious ceremony at the same mosque in 2010, 39 people, including women and children were killed. The terrorist group Jundollah claimed responsibility for that attack.

Jandollah's insurgency in the southeast suffered a significant setback in 2010, when Iranian authorities arrested and later executed the group's leader, Abdulmalik Rigi.
