by RFE/RL

Russia's state nuclear agency, Rosatom, has announced that the first reactor at the Bushehr nuclear power plant in Iran is now functioning at full capacity.

Rosatom said on its website on August 31 that as of 1847 local time in Iran on August 29, Block 1 at the Bushehr plant reached 100 percent power.

Igor Mezenitsa, a top official at Rosatom subsidiary Atomstroieksport, praised the company for completing Bushehr's construction, noting that the initial building at the site was launched by a German company in the 1970s.

Atomstroieksport was able to install its own V-446 reactor at the structure built by the Germans.

The first block of the Bushehr plant has the capacity to generate 1,000 megawatts.
