Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

Iran has upper hand in Baghdad talks in light of Supreme Leader’s Fatwa

Baghdad, May 23. IRNA -- The Supreme Leader’s Fatwa prohibiting possession of nuclear arms helped Iranian negotiating team have upper hand in Baghdad nuclear talks with Group 5+1 in upholding the international decision on disarmament.

The two-day negotiations with Group 5+1 are underway in Baghdad while different media have their own views about Iranian nuclear program, whereas, Iran has maintained time and again that the national nuclear program is civilian and at the same time calls for implementation of the international resolve requiring the nuclear weapons states to disarm.

The Supreme Leader’s edict made it clear that Islam prohibits producing weapons of mass destruction and the progress Iran has made in science and technology aims to upgrade people's standard of life and the expertise Iran acquired in application of know-how are used to improve agriculture and health sector.

In addition to the edict, the Supreme Leader has made references to the religious ban on possessing weapons of mass destruction including nuclear arms, chemical and biological weapons and has called for international action to be taken to eliminate such weapons by the nuclear weapons states to put an end to the threats posed by WMDs to humanity.

“The pretexts for hostility with Iran vary in different periods of time. They have focused on Iranian nuclear program. Of course, they know and they admit that Iran is not seeking to produce nuclear weapons. It is the reality, we never go after WMDs for the religious obligations. It is only a pretext for their hostility to Iran. One day they focus on nuclear program, the other day they resort to human rights. On other occasions they focus on a likely domestic issue. Their main problem with us is that the Islamic Republic of Iran is strongly safeguarding its huge wealth in the oil and gas sector,” the Supreme Leader said in his speech at Imam Reza (AS) Holy Shrine in Mashhad on the first day of the new Iranian year, Noruz.

“They embarked on hue and cry over Iranian nuclear program to stop our progress. They know that we do not want to have nuclear arms. I believe that the major policymaking organs in those countries which have launched a propaganda campaign against Iranian nuclear program are well-aware of the fact that Iran never intends to produce WMDs. We regard using such a weapon as a great sin and its stockpiling is detrimental to our national interest. We are never after that. We don’t see the nuclear arms as a factor of strength. Rather, we want to break the strength coming from WMDs and God willing this nation will do that.”

The Supreme Leader said earlier that since the United States created human tragedy in Hiroshima and Nagasaki through droppoing nuclear bombs on Japanese people, safety of mankind was endangered which makes it necessaryfor the international community to make a firm decision to destroy such weapons.

“The US bombardment of Hiroshima and Nagasaki not only created horrible tragedy for the mankind, it affected the life and health of the next generations in Japan and the neighboring states. The US bombardment killed the elderly, youth, women and children indiscriminately and civilians fell victims to the nuclear bombardment. Therefore, using such weapons must be considered tantamount to war crimes and crimes against humanity.”

The Supreme Leader regretted that despite a consensus made by the United Nations member states to annihilate WMDs, certain nuclear weapons states are dragging their feet to destroy their WMDs stockpiles.

‘Possessing and stockpiling such weapons guarantee the annihilation of humanity and will not bring security for its owners. WMDs will not bring victory in any war and those using such weapons are perpetrators of crimes against humanity and war crimes.
