Sharm al-Sheikh, May 9, IRNA -- Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi on Wednesday deplored non-observation of Article XI of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty that calls for elimination of nuclear weapons.
Addressing a meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) foreign ministers in the Egyptian resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh, Salehi said efforts should be made to force the Zionist regime of Israel to meet necessary conditions for materialization of the goal of making Middle East free from nuclear weapons.
He said, "Nothing should divert our attention from major threats to mankind posed by tactical and strategic nuclear weapons and their constant modernization as well as new military doctrine to use them."
He added, "In our opinion, the timetable, proposed by the Non-Aligned Movement for removal of nuclear weapons by 2025, will be observed only when we NAM members practically follow it up."
He said at the same time, the Zionist regime's refusal to join the NPT was the main impediment to universal observation of the treaty.
