Swedish FM urges stepped up EU diplomacy on Iran nuclear deadlock

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, Jan 23, IRNA -- Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt on Monday called on the European Union to step up diplomatic efforts to resolve the stalemate over Tehran's nuclear program, according to German Press Agency dpa.

Speaking ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Bildt warned sanctions alone are not 'the answer to this issue.'

'I hope the discussion today will put an emphasis on Europe seeking a diplomatic engagement, because that's the only way in which this can be solved,' he said.

'No one has an interest ... in confrontation or war,' Bild added.

Sweden's top diplomat has repeatedly made clear that a negotiated settlement was the only way to settle the Iranian nuclear deadlock.

Talks for an agreement with Iran are the only solution, everything else is unrealistic, Bild was quoted saying earlier in the German press.

He had also lambasted military threats against Iran, branding them 'highly counterproductive.'

Tehran has time and again called for unconditional talks with the West but has also reiterated it would not waiver its right to enrichment uranium.
