Salehi: IAEA not responsible for member states’ missile activities

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, Nov 13, IRNA -- Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said here Sunday that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is responsible to supervise member states’ nuclear activities and overseeing missile activities is not within its authority.

Talking to reporters on Sunday, he further noted that the entity has no responsibility regarding member states’ activities related to conventional arms. This has neither been mentioned in its article of association nor in NPT.

He also said that the agency’s recent report about Iran’s nuclear program was released as a result of political pressure. It was nnot a legal or technical issue.

They want to mount pressure on Iran to surrender to their wishes but Iran has indicated since 3,000 years ago how it can stand on its own feet, Salehi said.

“Amano’s report has nothing new,” he said, noting that he has referred to the documents earlier rejected by the former head of the agency, Mohamed El-Baradei.

As to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s imminent visit to Qatar, he said that the trip focuses on the summit of Gas OPEC, which is to be attended by member states.

Oil Minister Rostam Qasemi is currently in Qatar to attend the preliminary sessions of the summit.
