Bushehr plant; symbol of peaceful use of nuclear energy: Kiriyenko

Bushehr, Sept 12, IRNA -- Bushehr nuclear power plant is a symbol of peaceful use of nuclear energy in the world, the head of Rosatom company Sergei Kiriyenko said on Monday.

Speaking in the inaugural ceremony of initial stage of commissioning Bushehr nuclear power plant, the Russian official noted, 'Since the launch of Bushehr nuclear power plant has been an important event for the past three decades, Iranians have waited for, I congratulate its pre-launch to the Iranian nation.'

Referring to the use of parts from 10 different countries, he added that the Bushehr nuclear power plant is incomparable in the world and different from all other nuclear plants in designing.

“Bushehr nuclear power plant had been built according to the international standards and in the meantime, it has been under a peculiar national and international supervision, pointing to the Russian, Iranian and international supervision on the power plant,” Kiriyenko stated.

'The nuclear power plant safety has been always a priority for the building companies and we are committed to our duties toward Iran-Russia bilateral ties,' the head of Rosatom Company said.

The ceremony was held in presence of several high-ranking Iranian and Russian officials in Bushehr on Monday.

The ceremony was attended by Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization Fereydoon Abbasi, Energy Minister Majid Namjoo, visiting Russian Energy Minister Sergey Shmatko and head of the Rosatom nuclear agency Sergey Kirienko.

The Bushehr nuclear power plant joined the national power grid with a capacity of around 60 megawatts at 11:29 p.m. (1859 GMT) Saturday night.

Iran signed a deal with Russia in 1995, under which the plant was originally scheduled to be completed in 1999, but the completion of the project was repeatedly delayed. The nuclear power plant was finally finished with the help of Russia after 12 years delay.
