State TV Says Iran Guards Kill 22 Kurd Rebels

September 05, 2011

Iranian state television says that country's elite Revolutionary Guards have killed 22 rebels of the Party of Free Life of Kurdistan (PJAK) in a new offensive along the northwestern border with Iraq.

Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) operations officer Colonel Hamid Ahmadi said the offensive launched on September 2 would "continue until all counterrevolutionaries, rebels, and terrorists have been cleared away."

The report could not be independently confirmed.

Iranian media reported on September 3 that two IRGC guards had been killed on the first day of the offensive.

PJAK rebels have clashed repeatedly with Iranian forces in recent years, drawing retaliatory bombing of their rear bases in mountainous border districts of Iraqi Kurdistan.

In July, Iran launched a major offensive against the rebels, shelling border districts for weeks.

PJAK is an offshoot of the Turkey-based Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has been pounded by Turkish air strikes in recent weeks.
