TEHRAN (ISNA)-Russia is ready to play a role in Iran's nuclear issue, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday.

"Russia has always welcomed continuous talks between officials of the two sides. We are ready for fostering mutual ties, international relations and playing a role in Iran's nuclear issue," Lavrov said in a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi in Moscow.

"We have worked together and we are prepared to continue cooperation," Lavrov added.

Iranian Foreign Minister on his part said, "we consider Russian move a step forward which resulted from good treatment of Russia with Iran."

He then referred to Iran's Bushehr nuclear plant and added, "Iran is on the verge of generating power from the plant and the nuclear facility will be connected to the national grid soon."

Salehi left for Moscow Tuesday night for an official visit following official invitation of his Russian counterpart.

In July, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called for "phased" approach to resolve Iran's nuclear issue whereby Iran would address questions raised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about its nuclear activities in a staged schedule and in return economic sanctions imposed on Iran would be removed in a staged manner over time.
