TEHRAN (ISNA)-The Chief of Atomic Energy Organization of Iranian (AEOI) said Bushehr nuclear power plant would join the national grid in near future.

"Bushehr nuclear power plant is becoming operational and it is operational phase is passing a positive process," Fereidoun Abbasi said on Sunday on the sidelines of cabinet meeting.

"The facility will join the national grid soon. The achievement will be made public as soon as the nuclear installation connects to the national grid," he added.

"No power has been generated from the facility so far and we are now only conducting experimental tests to launch the reactor."

He then highlighted safety of the plant and added, "we need to run the installation safely."

Construction of the Bushehr plant was started in 1975 by several German companies. However, work halted when the United States imposed an embargo on hi-tech supplies to Iran after the 1979 revolution. Russia signed a contract with Iran to complete the construction in 1998.

Completion of the plant's construction was postponed several times by technical problems and pressures from the United States.

The West accuses Iran of producing nuclear weapons, Iran denies the allegation and insists its enrichment activities only seek peaceful purposes, including power generation and medical needs.

Iran is under 4 sets of the UN Security Council sanctions over its refusal to halt peaceful enrichment work.
