Navy Commander: Mission to be accomplished heedless of threats

Damascus, Feb 24, IRNA -- IRI Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said here Wednesday night Iranian warships would accomplish their commission heedless of Israel's hue and cry and phony threats.

According to the IRNA correspondent in Damascus, Admiral Sayyari made the comment after arrival in Syria in response to IRNA question whether there is any concern regarding the probability of an Israeli attack against the Iranian warships.

The Islamic Republic of Iran Navy commander who was speaking with the media reporters in Damascus added, 'The Zionist regime might create worries for itself and view the issue from a certain point, but we will accomplish our mission heedless of that regime and in full harmony with friend countries in the region.'

According to Sayyari, the Iranian warships visit of Syria's Lazeqiyya Port is quite a regular naval practice, whose mission is conveying the message of peace and friendship for the entire world countries.

In response to another question, 'How can you send a message of peace from a warship?' The Iranian navy Commander said, 'The navies in the world have warships not commercial, or private cruse vessels, with which they perform their missions. That is because the civil ships are under commercial regulations and the armed forces' rules are quite different.'

Sayyari ruled out the Iranian warships' involvement in any war games in this visit, noting, 'The Iranian naval fleet's visit of Lazeqiyya Port is quite a friendly mission and a large number of the IRI Navy University cadets are present in it that are getting trained for presence in long distance voyages.'

He reiterated, 'The passage of this fleet through the Suez Canal was harmonized with the Egyptian Government and it is presently sailing in the Mediterranean Sea.'

The IRI Navy commander who arrived in Syria atop an IRI Navy high brass delegation was received at Damascus International Airport by IRI Deputy Ambassador Seyyed Moussa Alizadeh Tabataba'ie, IRI Embassy Military Attaché Brigadier General Mohammad Zamanian, Deputy Syrian Navy Commander General Showkat and two Syrian Army deputy commanders.

The Iranian navy commander and his accompanying delegation have come to Syria to participate at the joint ceremony of the two countries' naval forces on the occasion of the arrival of the two warships of the mighty IRI Navy at Lazeqiyya Port in the west side of Syria.

The ceremony is scheduled to take place on Thursday afternoon in the presence of the two countries' top political and military officials.

The 1,500 ton Alvand Warship, equipped with thunderbolt throwers and ship to ship missiles and the 33,000 ton Khark logistical and fuel carrier ship, capable of carrying 250 sailors and three helicopters arrived in Mediterranean waters on Tuesday after passing through the Suez Canal.
