Russia renews opposition to anti-Iran sanctions
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Moscow, Feb 17, IRNA -- Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Alexander Lukashevich, said on Thursday that Moscow is strongly against a new round of US-backed UN sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Lukashevich made the remark at a press conference in Moscow and in response to a question asked by IRNA correspondent to Russia.
He further said that any sanctions against Iran are futile and unconstructive.
'Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at a press conference in London last Tuesday announced that Russia opposes sanctions against Iran and deems them as futile,' Lukashevich added.
He noted that the unauthorized sanctions against Iran are outside the framework of decisions of the UN Security Council and they are unacceptable.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had voiced his opposition to a new round of sanctions imposed on Iran at a joint press conference with his British counterpart British Foreign Secretary William Hague held in London last Tuesday.
'New sanctions mean creating economic and social problems for the Iranian nation and hence Russian government cannot support such measures,' Lavrov said.
