IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

New York, Feb 9, IRNA -- Iran's permanent representative at the United Nations, responding to statement of EU Foreign Policy Chief Katherine Ashton, said that Iran intends to defend its legitimate right to use nuclear energy for peaceful goals upon Non-Proliferation Treaty.

In a meeting of Security Council on Tuesday concerning cooperation between the UN and regional small and large organizations to maintain international peace and security, Mohammad Khazaei responded to statements of Ashton about Iran's nuclear activities and Istanbul Talks.

He said that claims about nature of Iran's nuclear program are baseless and not constructive and stressed that Iran's nuclear activities were and will be peaceful and this issue has been repeatedly confirmed by International Atomic Energy Agency.

Khazaei underlined that as it was already declared and it is underscored again, Iran is fully committed to NPT and will continue its cooperation with the IAEA upon its agreements.

Iran also intends to continue defending its legitimate right to use nuclear energy with peaceful purposes upon NPT.

He added that Iran's legitimate right included enrichment of uranium and fuel full circle which should be recognized by Group 5+1.

The Iranian diplomat underscored that Iran has always been ready for continuation of dialogue upon common understanding and mutual respect.
