Jalili arrives in Istanbul to attend G5+1 meeting

Istanbul, Jan 20, IRNA -- Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, arrived in Istanbul on Thursday at the head of a delegation to attend the meeting between Iranian officials and Group 5+1 (France, China, US, Russia, UK plus Germany) slated for January 21-22.
Jalili was welcomed by Iranian ambassador to Turkey, Bahman Hosseinpour and Iranian consul in Istanbul, Mahmoud Heidari.
Upon his arrival in Turkey, Jalili thanked Turkish officials for their efforts to help resolve the nuclear dispute with the western governments.
He said that the International Atomic Energy Agency in its repetitive reports over the past five years has verified non-diversion of Iranian nuclear program from Non-Proliferation Treaty and the IAEA Safeguards Agreement.
Rejecting the claims that Iran is buying time, Jalili said: “We announced in Geneva meetings that there is no need to a halt in negotiations.”
Iran and the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany are still at loggerheads over the threat the nuclear arms have posed to security of the international community.
The G5+1 says it needs objective guarantees that Iranian nuclear program will not divert from the civilian path and Iran criticizes the nuclear weapons states for procrastination to dismantle stockpiles of Weapons of Mass Destruction in accord with the timetable set by the United Nations.
Iran says that the western governments are currently upgrading their stockpiles of WMDs rather than dismantle them jeopardizing the international peace and security.
The negotiations have focused on the 'objective guarantees' being sought by both sides, the first by the G5+1 about Iranian nuclear program and the second by Iran about the western governments' announced plans to upgrade their nuclear weapons stockpiles.
