Iran on agenda of Merkel's talks with Chinese Vice Premier: official

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, Jan 5, IRNA -- Iran's nuclear program will be on the agenda when Chancellor Angela Merkel meets China's Vice Premier Li Keqiang in Berlin on Friday, German foreign ministry spokesman Andreas Peschke told the press on Wednesday.

Iran and the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany have resumed a new series of negotiations to allay Iranian security concerns in light of inaction of the nuclear weapons states to dismantle stockpiles of Weapons of Mass Destruction in accord with the timetable set by the United Nations.

The G5+1 is skeptical of Iranian nuclear program while Iran is critical of the nuclear weapons states for their refusal to abide by the Global Disarmanent Treaty.

Iran says Iranian nuclear program aims to generate electricity to meet the growing demand and the International Atomic Energy Agency has verified non-diversion of Iran from the civilian purpose.

Iran berated the nuclear weapons states for upgrading their stockpiles of WMDs rather than dismantle them in line with their obligation envisaged by the global disarmament treaty.

Meanwhile, the Chinese deputy prime minister's talks with Merkel will also focus on Sudan and other international issues as well as economic and climate policies.

Merkel and Li are expected to discuss boosting bilateral trade valued at around 140 billion US dollars last year, or nearly 30 percent of China's commerce with the European Union.

A member of China's powerful Politburo Standing Committee, Li is widely tipped to become the next prime minister.
