Funerals Held in Iran for Mosque Bombing Victims

VOA News
17 December 2010

Iranian state media say funerals have been held for 39 people who were killed Wednesday when suicide bombers targeted a Shi'ite religious ceremony.

The IRNA news agency says Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammed Najjar led a high-ranking delegation in a funeral procession in Chahbahar, Friday. The news agency says eight victims were buried in the southeastern city while the bodies of the other victims were transferred to their provinces of origin.

The victims were killed in a double suicide bombing near a mosque. Worshippers had gathered at the site in advance of Ashura, one of the most important holy days for Shi'ite Muslims.

The Sunni rebel group Jundallah - Soldiers of God - has claimed responsibility for the attack, which took place in Sistan-Baluchestan province.

On Thursday, Iranian authorities announced the arrests of nine suspects allegedly linked to the incident.
