IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Vienna, Nov 2, IRNA -- IRI ambassador and permanent representative at Vienna international organizations said here Monday Iran’s power equals that of powers that have nuclear arms, needless of possessing such weapons.

Ali-Asghar Soltaniyeh made the comment at The IAEA Inspections Fortifying Symposium in the presence of 700 experts and technicians from various countries at the agency’s Vienna headquarters.

The symposium is held also in the presence of the IAEA deputies and some international personalities to discuss the nuclear weapons’ proliferation issue, some discussions related to the agency’s inspections, and the deficiencies related to the scientific and technical development of the IAEA inspection for five days.

On the first working day of the symposium referring to the presented topics of discussions, including the need to fully respect the political systems, security, and national security of the member countries, and abiding by the stated regulations in the agency’s letter of association, Soltaniyeh said that entire inspections must be conducted quite technically, free from politicizing and issued beyond the inspectors’ nuclear expertise.”

He added, “Sometimes the inspectors deviate from their originals tasks to an extent that their conduct approaches the countries’ security and information areas, and at times even resemble spying.”

The Iranian ambassador at the agency said, “Regarding the main objective, that is blocking the path for proliferation of the nuclear weapons, we must reiterated that the focus of attention should be on the very same matter, and in order to do that, in order to decrease the quantity of the existing nuclear weapons we should not be deceived with such pacts as the START agreements.”

Soltaniyeh added, “That is because the international community has shown its hatred of the nuclear weapons during the past decades and these countries resorting to such agreements as the SALT 1 and 2 try to cheat the world public opinion, delaying the annihilation of their nuclear weapons for several more years.”

Reminding the audience of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s stands at the Non Aligned Movement (NAM) and the NPT Review Conference in New York, on the need to defining a deadline, like the year 2025, for the full annihilation of the nuclear weapons, he said, “That seems to be the only way to solve the problem, while the US president’s stands in Prague were deviation from that international demand.”

Since on the first working day of the gathering in two cases the lecturers had referred to the Iranian nuclear program, while stressing its peaceful nature, Iran’s representative said, “It is expected that at this gathering, without dealing with certain issues related to particular countries, the focus of attention would be on scientific, technical and legal issues, but I feel obliged to add in reply to the stated comments that in addition to the ban on production of the weapons of mass destruction, including the nuclear weapons from the religious point of the view, the Islamic Republic of Iran is today enjoying an equal power with the nuclear powers, such as the United States, needless of possessing the nuclear weapons.”

Soltaniyeh said, “Iran’s power should not be sought in nuclear weapons, since that power is in adopting logical stands and insisting on them.”
