Mottaki to talk on fate of Iranian detainees in US with UN chief

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

New York, Sept 28, IRNA -- Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said on Monday that he is to talk on the fate of Iranian detainees in the US during his upcoming meeting with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 66th UN General Assembly meeting on Monday night, he said eight Iranian nationals are serving prison terms in the US jails due on false charges.

During my previous visit to New York, I handed over a list of these persons to Ban Ki-moon and asked him to follow up their fate, he said.

Some of these people have been arrested in other countries such as England but the US has called on them to handed them over to the United Sates which indicates the US unjust policy, he said.

On the arrest of three American spies by Iranian forces, he said these people had crossed the Iranian borders illegally.

It is amazing that a number of US officials claim that the three persons were hikers traveling in Iraq, Mottaki said.

Some countries such as Oman and Senegal had called for release of the three American spies, he said.

Their files are now being investigated in the Iranian judiciary and one of them was released on bail on humanitarian ground, Mottaki said.

It is quite evident that the exchange of prisoners between the two counries is totally out of question, he said.
