Files of 3 US nationals sent to court - Prosecutor
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Tehran, Sept 15, IRNA – Public prosecutor Abbas Jaafari Dowlatabadi said here on Wednesday that files of three US nationals accused of spying has been sent to the court.
Addressing a press conference, Dowlatabadi said the files along with bill of indictment were sent to the court on Wednesday.
On the timing of the three Americans’ trial, Dowlatabadi hoped that the court in charge of investigating the case will be held soon.
On the release of US national Sara Shourd on a $500,000 bail, Dowlatabadi said as for Mrs. Shourd’s case, the US officials had said they would not provide the bail. “We should tell the US in response that we have not set the bail for the US government to meet , rather we set it forthe accused.”
He said the money has been deposited in the account of the Muscat National Bank of Oman and Bank Melli of Iran (BMI) too has informed the justice department of the issue in an official letter on Tuesday.
He said the money will be deposited in the BMI account by Muscat National Bank in the next two or three days because these days are Eid-ul-Fitr public holidays in Oman.
The official said that the BMI has of course announced in a written letter and based on regulations that Muscat National Bank has guaranteed the sum.
“So the claim raised by the US government has nothing to do with our case basically and the bail met either by the attorney or Sarah Shourd's family should be enough,” he said.
“The money will be deposited in the account of the Justice Administration office and will be recorded,” he added.
Asked how Sarah Shourd will attend the court regarding the fact that she has left the country, he said the bail guarantees the presence of the accused and in her absence the money put as bail will be confiscated.
“The law has made necessary predictions in this regard. With departure of Mrs. Shourd, the court will inform the Swiss Embassy, which takes care of the US interests in Iran, of the date of the trial, and if she fails to attend the court, the bail money will be confiscated.”
