IAEA expected to safeguard its legal status: MP

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, Sept 7, IRNA -- Spokesman for Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Kazem Jalali said here on Tuesday that International Atomic Energy Agency is expected to keep its legal status and avoid political approaches.

Criticizing new reports by director general of the agency Yukiya Amano on Iran’s peaceful nuclear activities, Kazem Jalali added that the entity should not be influenced by big powers because the issue will prompt nations to adopt a negative attitude towards it.

Commenting on Iran’s justifications for expelling two IAEA inspectors, he further noted that Iran’s measure in this respect is totally legal and in compliance with the contents of NPT.

Based on NPT, the agency introduces the inspectors and the hosting country can allow them in or not, he said.

“Barring the inspectors does not imply rejecting inspection,” he said, noting that Iran has objection to the principle of inspection but if the inspectors want to spy on Iran and violate its national sovereignty, Iran can expel them.

Commenting on Amano’s statements that Iran should have notified the agency of its plans to set up 10 nuclear enrichment sites before making it public, Jalali said that it has only announced that it intends to do so and that it is currently making preliminary studies.

“Iran has not violated any regulation and it has clearly declared that it wants to establish ten enrichment sites,” he said.

Describing the raising of the alleged studies for the second time as strange, Jalali who is an MP from Shahroud, Semnan province said that following the Modality, the agency was supposed to remove all its doubts regarding Iran’s nuclear activities and the agency forwarded six cases and Tehran addressed them.

The agency also accepted Iran's explanations, he said, noting that those making claims regarding Iran’s nuclear activities should present their evidence.
