Salehi: Iran has not received any reply from Vienna Group

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, August 31, IRNA -- Head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization Ali-Akbar Salehi said on Tuesday that Iran has not received any official response from Vienna Group on fuel swap.

Speaking to IRNA, he said Iran has announced that it is prepared to resume talks on Tehran Declaration and is waiting for their confirmation to this effect.

Tehran Declaration will be cornerstone of talks with the Vienna Group without setting any preconditions, Salehi said.

Iran demanded the International Atomic Energy Agency make arrangements to supply fuel for Tehran medical research reactor.

IAEA gave a proposal to Iran to deliver 1,200 kg of 3.5 percent enriched uranium in return for 20 percent fuel by the western fuel suppliers. A timetable was also envisaged for the swap.

Iran criticized the western suppliers for negligence of fuel shortage at Tehran medical research reactor which produces isotopes and medicines to cure cancer patients.

Iran says that the reactor is currently operating below its capacity due to fuel shortages and the western suppliers are making procrastination in delivery of fuel.

Iranian public opinion is well aware that the western suppliers are pursuing financial gains rather than consider humanitarian dimension of operating the reactor which produces medicines for cancer patients.

Some 400,000 cancer patients are currently using medicine being produced by Tehran medical reactor.
