Iran, Russia sign nuclear cooperation agreement

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Bushehr, Aug 21, IRNA -- Iranian and Russian officials signed an agreement on Saturday for bilateral cooperation in the field of nuclear activities after the beginning of fuel loading process in the first Iranian nuclear power plant in this southern province today.

Based on the agreement, the two sides announced the Bushehr nuclear power plant as an atomic power plant immediately after the beginning of the nuclear fuel injection to the facility up to its complete becoming operational.

The process of loading nuclear fuel started in the long-delayed power plant Saturday morning in the presence of Iranian and Russian nuclear energy officials.

The facility, which is built with the help of Russia, is to start generating power in the Iranian calendar month of Aban (October-November 2010).

Head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization Ali-Akbar Salehi said during a ceremony to mark the fuel loading process Saturday morning that the Bushehr nuclear power plant was the “most exceptional power plant of the world” as it was built with a combination of western and eastern technologies.

The power plant was originally due to be built with the help of the US and European states some 36 years ago but it was halted after the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979.

After the revolution, Iran decided to continue the project with the help of less Western states and mostly in cooperation with Russia.
