Mottaki: Fuel swap formula still on table

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, Aug 11, IRNA -- Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki said Tuesday evening that the formula on fuel swap with the western suppliers is still on the table.

The FM who is currently in Syria to discuss issues of mutual interest with Syrian officials, made the remarks before his departure to that country.

Mottaki’s statement was made during a meeting with deputy foreign minister of Switzerland.

Mottaki said that the problem with West and particularly the US was that they have adopted double-standard policy and approach in dealing with international crises which rooted from their unilateralism.

If the US and other Western states are to solve existing problems they have to stop repeating their old and failed approaches, he said.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has put forward a proposal on fuel swap with the western suppliers to provide fuel for Tehran medical research reactor.

Brazil President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan brokered a swap deal with Iran in May according to which Iran will deliver 3.5 percent enriched uranium to the western suppliers in return for 20 percent fuel for Tehran medical research reactor.

A timeframe has been envisaged for supply of 20 percent fuel by the western suppliers after delivery of 3.5 percent enriched uranium by Iran.
