Iran Denies Attack on President
Edward Yeranian 04 August 2010
Iran's state media are denying reports that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was targeted in a grenade attack Wednesday.
A conservative website khabaronline.ir reported earlier that a grenade detonated near Mr. Ahmadinejad's convoy as he was traveling in the western region of Hamedan.
The Reuters news agency and Al-Arabiya television also called the incident an attack on the Iranian leader, citing a source in his office.
However, state-run Press TV said the blast was caused by a firecracker, possibly set off in a welcoming ceremony for the Iranian leader.
Nobody was injured, and Mr. Ahmadinejad went on to deliver an anti-West speech in Hamedan without mentioning the incident.
The Iranian president has said he believes he is the target of assassination plots. In an address to Iranian expatriates Monday, he accused Israel of hiring and training people to kill him.
Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
