No reply yet from Vienna Group for resumption of talks, Soltanieh

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Vienna, July 31, IRNA -- Iranian Ambassador to International Atomic Energy Agency Ali Asghar Soltanieh said on Saturday that Iran has not received a reply from the Vienna Group for resumption of talks on fuel swap for Tehran reactor.

Soltanieh criticized the Vienna Group -- the IAEA, permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany -- for the delay in reply for Iranian letter on resumption of talks.

Iran has announced preparedness to immediate talks on fuel swap for Tehran medical research reactor and Soltanieh delivered a letter to that effect to IAEA director general Amano Yukiya.

"It is surprising that the European Union adopted sanctions on Iran the same day that I delivered the letter to Mr. Amano Yukiya," Soltanieh said.

Iran needs 20 percent fuel for Tehran medical research reactor and the IAEA has called for swap of the fuel in return for 3.5 percent enriched uranum to be delivered by Tehran.

Iran accepted the IAEA proposal and called for negotiations with the suppliers on arrangements for the swap.

The Tehran medical research reactor set up since 1970s produces isotopes to cure cancer patients.

The reactor is currently working lower than its capacity due to fuel shortage.
