EU's Ashton "hopeful" on reviving Iran talks in fall: DPA

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, Jul 14, IRNA -- European Union is "hopeful" that talks with Iran over its nuclear program could resume soon, German press agency DPA quoted officials as saying in Brussels Wednesday.

According to the report, the EU's foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton had replied to a recent letter from Tehran's chief nuclear negotiator, Saeid Jalili.

The Iranian official had reportedly informed Ashton he was ready for "talks starting

September 2010," but on condition that the EU condemns Israel's nuclear arsenal and cancels plans for further sanctions on Tehran.

"There were positive indications in Dr. Jalili's letter that the Iranian authorities are willing to restart dialogue with (EU) High Representative Ashton," a spokesman told the DPA.

"The High Representative has responded in that spirit, and is hopeful that talks could resume as soon as possible, preferably in autumn," the official added.
