CAIRO, June 30 (RIA Novosti) - The international community has left open the possibility for Iran to resume diplomatic talks on its nuclear program, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday.
"We are interested in resuming the dialogue mechanism ...with Iran for discussing its nuclear program and the issues that concern the Iranian party," Lavrov said in the Egyptian capital during his Middle East tour.
He said recent sanctions against Iran were essential to show Teheran it should not drag its feet on "answering legitimate questions the IAEA has posed to Iran," adding that Russia "does not believe in sanctions" because they usually do not bring any desired results.
The UN Security Council voted on June 9 in favor of a fourth round of sanctions against Iran for failing to halt its uranium enrichment program.
The UN sanctions include tougher financial controls and an expanded arms embargo, as well as an asset ban and a travel freeze on more than three dozen companies and individuals.
