Iran, Turkmenistan eager to promote global disarmament: Mottaki

Ashkhabad, June 24, IRNA -- Iran's Foreign Minster Manouchehr Mottaki said Thursday that hosting international disarmament conference by Iran and Turkmenistan is an indication to the two countries will to promote the issue of disarmament worldwide.

The Turkmen international disarmament conference, shortly opened after the Tehran disarmament conference held on April 17, proves that the Tehran confab was successful, he added.

Mottaki, who is currently here to attend an international conference on disarmament in the Turkmen capital city, made the remarks while talking to reporters after his meeting with the Turkmen President Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov.

Mottaki said the international conference on disarmament in the Central Asia and the Caspian Sea region shows that Iran and Turkmenistan are well determined to focus on demilitarization of the world and the region.

The ongoing conference will pave the way for establishment of peace and tranquility in the Central Asia, the Iranian foreign minister added.

On Iran-Turkmenistan bilateral cooperation, he said Tehran and Ashkhabad are capable of fostering their bilateral economic ties.

The international conference on disarmament in the Central Asia and the Caspian Sea region inaugurated in Ashkhabad by President Berdymukhamedov.

Mottaki is due to brief the audience on the Islamic Republic of Iran’s stands regarding global disarmament.

Foreign ministers of Iran, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan as well as deputy foreign ministers of Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Azerbaijan are present in the conference.
