Pakistan for diplomatic solution to Iran nuclear issue

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, June 11, IRNA -- Calling for diplomatic settlement of Iran nuclear issue, the Foreign Ministry said Thursday Pakistan has always called for a negotiated settlement of the issues surrounding Iranian nuclear program.

“Pakistan will continue encouraging all the parties concerned to re-engage in a purposeful diplomacy and settle differences in the spirit of cooperation and accommodation,” the Foreign Ministry spokesman Abdul Basit said.

The Ministry spokesman was replying to questions at his weekly press briefing regarding UN Security Council's new resolution imposing more curbs on Iran.

On Wednesday the Security Council voted 12 to two, with one abstention, in favour of a fourth round of sanctions, including tighter finance curbs and an expanded arms embargo.

The US has promoted the sanctions as the toughest Iran has yet faced.

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad earlier warned his country would not agree to further nuclear talks if the sanctions were imposed.

Abdul Basit said the multi-billion Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project would not be hit by the new sanctions.

He pointed out that the resolutions and restrictions imposed are not related to the gas pipeline project that is a commercial venture and beyond the purview of the resolution.
